If you enjoy classical music, you don’t have to travel far or pay huge ticket prices to hear it live! The two Havant Orchestras provide an opportunity for local musicians (including music teachers and talented amateur musicians) to perform together and for local audiences to experience live orchestral music for very reasonable prices, with special low prices for students and children.
Both orchestras have a solid reputation for high quality performances with outstanding soloists, including familiar local musicians, up-and-coming new talent and established international performers.
Oaklands School Hall |
Havant Symphony Orchestra (HSO) concerts are at Oaklands Catholic School, Waterlooville, which is fortunate to have the best hall in the area for large orchestral concerts, with raked seating and excellent acoustics.
Our December concerto soloist, left-hand pianist Nicholas McCarthy, is joining HSO for the first time. Our soloists in March and July are outstanding violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky and distinguished cellist Raphael Wallfisch, both of whom have previously performed with both HSO and HCO, although Raphael Wallfisch’s performances were back in the 1980s.
HSO’s Bob Harding Bursary Award scheme enables a talented student conductor to work with the orchestra throughout the season, and each HSO concert normally includes at least one work conducted by the current award holder. For the 2017-18 season, the award holder is Richard Miller.
Havant Chamber Orchestra (HCO) concerts continue at Ferneham Hall, Fareham. The October concert features two of our own star players from HCO, Robert Blanken (clarinet) and Richard Moore (bassoon), in Richard Strauss’s delightful Duet Concertino, and also includes Fauré, Elgar and Schubert. In February’s concert, new soloist Richard Uttley performs the Schumann piano concerto, and HCO’s exploration of the work of Beethoven continues with his ‘Eroica’ Symphony. For the final concert in May, new soloist Rose Hsien (violin) performs Mozart and Dvořák, and the concert concludes appropriately with Mozart’s ‘Prague’ Symphony.
Separate season tickets are available for the three concerts at each venue, with a further price reduction when season tickets are purchased for both venues. Single tickets are on sale from September, after the initial season ticket seats have been allocated.
In addition to the main program of three concerts by each orchestra, Havant Symphony Orchestra have a pre-season concert of ‘Popular Classics’ at Hayling Island Community Centre on Saturday 30th September 2017, conducted by our 2016-17 Bob Harding Bursary award holder Tom Griffin. We also hope to fit in another additional concert by the strings of Havant Chamber Orchestra at Emsworth Baptist Church as we did in March 2017.
