Traditional pre-season ‘Popular Classics’
Havant Symphony Orchestra return for their annual visit to Hayling Island Community Centre with a programme of superb large orchestral works!
Nicolai’s Overture to The Merry Wives of Windsor is a delightful romp written for an opera based on Shakespeare’s play of the same name.
The Second Piano Concerto by Rachmaninov was last year voted the nation’s favourite piece
of classical music when it topped the Classic FM Ultimate Hall of Fame, covering 20 years of Hall of Fame voting.
To play it on this occasion we are delighted to welcome Jinah Shim, one of the artists supported by the
Philip and Dorothy Green Award which makes it possible for talented young musicians to reach audiences across the country.
The second half of the concert will be the Second Symphony by Sibelius, that genius of musical nordic noir!
Our brass section will feature heavily as we traverse the frozen wastes of this fantastically atmospheric and lyrical music.
The Orchestra will be conducted by Joseph Beckhelling, 2015-16 holder of our Bob Harding Bursary for Young Conductors.
Joe graduated in 2015 from Southampton University having been taught there by our Chamber Orchestra MD Robin Browning.
During the 2015-16 season he has worked with the Symphony Orchestra and MD Jonathan Butcher,
and we are looking forward to working with him for our Popular Classics concert at Hayling.
