English and French composers meet at Waterlooville!

Havant Symphony Orchestra presents an English idyll with a jaunt across the Channel for Ravel’s gorgeous Piano Concerto in G Major.  The soloist in the Ravel will be outstanding young pianist Dinara Klinton.  Dinara was born in Ukraine, studied at the Royal College of Music in London and at the Moscow State Conservatory and has won competition prizes all over the world.

Handel’s music “In the Lord put I my trust” just wasn’t beefy enough for Edward Elgar so he made his own arrangement of its Overture using a huge orchestra including instruments Handel had never even heard of!

Elgar’s compatriot Gustav Holst loved English folk music and wrote his “Somerset Rhapsody” based on songs collected by the avid folksong collector Cecil Sharp.  Expanding the English theme to a full symphony, we will play the “London Symphony” by Vaughan Williams – listen out for the Westminster chimes and music which evokes “Bloomsbury Square on a November afternoon” and “the distant sounds of The Strand”!
