Rehearsal Schedule 2018-19

Normal rehearsal times and locations

Havant Symphony Orchestra rehearsals are normally held every Friday evening during school term time (except on the day before a Havant Chamber Orchestra concert) from 7.00pm to 9.30pm (a little earlier than last year to fit with rail timetable changes affecting our conductor’s journey home) at St. Faith’s Church Hall, The Pallant, Havant, PO9 1BE (see map).  There is a car park next to the hall, off East Pallant, which is a one-way street towards the hall, so you need to approach it via Beechworth Road.

The final afternoon rehearsal on the concert day is at the concert venue, and for concerts at Hayling Island Community Centre or Oaklands Catholic School the rehearsal the preceding evening is usually also at the same location.  See the following sections on this page for additional information about rehearsals and specific rehearsal details, and the complete rehearsal schedule for a summary of the latest information on rehearsal dates and locations.

St. Faith’s Church Hall is sometimes unavailable for HSO rehearsals or bursary auditions, in which case we usually move across Havant to St. Joseph’s Church Hall, West Street, PO9 1LP (see map)

The HSO rehearsal includes a coffee break at around 8.30pm.  Coffee or tea and biscuits are provided (for a contribution of 20p).

Havant Chamber Orchestra rehearsals take place in Havant on the two Tuesdays immediately preceding the concert date, from 7.30pm to 10.00pm.  There is a break, but no refreshments are provided.

HCO used to rehearse mostly at St. Faith’s Church Hall as well, but the hall is no longer available on Tuesdays, so rehearsals for this season are at Bosmere Junior School, South Street, PO9 1DA (see map)

Players please bring a music stand to all rehearsals.

Additional information about rehearsal arrangements will be added below from time to time; players are advised to check this page regularly for reminders and additional rehearsal details.

Specific HSO rehearsal details

[27th January 2019]

This is a reminder that Friday 8th February is confirmed as an additional HSO rehearsal (at the usual venue of St Faith's).  Although Friday 22nd February (during half term) was considered as a possible extra rehearsal date, there are no plans to do this at present.

[15th December 2018]

Jonathan Butcher has requested an HSO rehearsal on Friday 11th January after all, for the first run-through of the works for the March HSO concert, even though neither of our Havant rehearsal locations (St Faith's and St Joseph's) is available.  The rehearsal will therefore be at Hayling Island Community Centre (our September concert venue) from 7.00pm-9.30pm on Friday 11th January.

Also, the arrangements for the initial run-through rehearsal for the Peter Craddock Celebration Concert are being changed, to enable Toby Purser to accept an important opportunity which means he is no longer available on the original date of Friday 22nd February.  This rehearsal is now scheduled for Friday 1st February at St Faith's, which would have been a normal HSO rehearsal date.

The original rehearsal schedule included an extra HSO rehearsal on Friday 8th February (the day before the HCO concert) to make up for the HSO rehearsal on 11th January which had been dropped because the Havant venues were unavailable.  As Friday 11th January has been reinstated but Friday February 1st is no longer an HSO rehearsal, it is likely that Friday 8th February will still be needed as an additional HSO rehearsal, but this has not yet been confirmed.  There is also a possibility that Friday 22nd February (during half term) might be used as an extra rehearsal date.

[18th October 2018, revised 15th December with changed rehearsal date]

There will be a special concert on Sunday 3rd March, 2.30pm at Oaklands School to celebrate our memories of Peter Craddock, the founder of the Havant Orchestras and musical director for 50 years.  The concert will be conducted by past Bursary holders Mark Wigglesworth and Toby Purser and current bursary holder Stefano Boccacci.  The orchestra will include any current HSO or HCO members who wish to play.  We are also trying to invite any past players for whom we still have contact details and who are still active and able to attend.  If we have more players than we need in non-string parts, this may require some doubling or rotation of positions for different works.

The rehearsals for this concert will be on Friday 22nd February (half term week) Friday 1st February, Friday 1st March (normal HSO rehearsal dates), Saturday 2nd March at Oaklands (morning and afternoon) and Sunday 3rd March in the morning, with the concert on the Sunday afternoon.  More details are shown in the schedule below

[18th October 2018]

The HSO rehearsal scheduled for Friday 11th January has had to be cancelled because Dynamo Youth Theatre are using the hall and there is no suitable alternative venue available.  To make up for this, there will be a rehearsal on Friday 8th February, the day before the February HCO concert, which would normally have been a day off to allow HCO players to prepare for the concert.
