Thursday 1st February 2024

Dear Havant Orchestras Updates mailing list subscriber,

The next Havant Chamber Orchestra concert is coming up this weekend, Saturday 3rd February, 7.30pm, at Holy Trinity Church, Fareham, conducted by Robin Browning.

There will be a pre-concert talk at 6.30pm by Tim Griffiths.

The concert programme is as follows:

Schubert: Overture in the Italian Style in C, D591
Mozart: Violin Concerto No 4 in D major, K218, with soloist Alexandra Peel
Mendelssohn: Symphony No 4 in A major, “Italian”

Alexandra Peel 3a
Alexandra Peel

It might be a bit dark and gloomy in Fareham in February but come along and experience the warmth of the Italian sunshine at our concert featuring local young violin soloist Alexandra Peel.

The composers are all German, but they all loved to travel and to explore the music of other countries.  Schubert wrote his two Overtures later dubbed ‘In the Italian Style’ out of admiration for the great opera composer Rossini.  Mendelssohn was greatly inspired by landscapes and said in a letter home from Italy that this, his fourth symphony, was “the jolliest piece I have ever done”.

Mozart, of course, travelled extensively around Europe from a very early age and his Violin Concerto No. 4 is, like the Mendelssohn, joyful and full of fun.

See the programme page on the website for more details.  Further information about the concert and other news about the society can be found in the Havant Orchestras Newsletter for January 2024 which is now available on the website.

Saturday 14th May 2023

Dear Havant Orchestras Update mailing list subscriber,

The next Havant Chamber Orchestra concert is coming up next weekend, Saturday 20th May, 7.30pm, at Holy Trinity Church, Fareham, conducted by Robin Browning.

This is a special concert focusing on Beethoven.  It was originally scheduled for May 2020 as part of the “Beethoven 250” events, celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in 1770, but it had to be postponed because of the pandemic.

This event is somewhat different from our usual concert format.  Instead of the traditional concerto, the first half includes a presentation by HCO music director Robin Browning talking about Beethoven and in particular his Pastoral Symphony, illustrated with instrumental and orchestral excerpts.  After the interval, the usual format resumes with a full performance of the symphony.

Note that there is no pre-concert talk as the concert already includes a talk.

The programme is as follows:

Beethoven – Overture “Coriolan”
Presentation by Robin Browning – Exploring Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony
Beethoven – Symphony No. 6 in F, “Pastoral”

See the programme page on the website for more details.  Further information about the concert and other news may be found in the Havant Orchestras Newsletter for May 2023 which is now available on the website.

The programme of Havant Orchestras concerts for the 2023-24 season is now also available on the website.  Printed brochures describing the main concerts and season ticket application forms will be available at Havant Orchestras concerts.

The next Havant Chamber Orchestra concert is on Saturday 18th May, at Holy Trinity Church, Fareham, at 7:30pm.  It will be conducted by Robin Browning and performed by the HCO strings with two wind soloists.  The church is only half a mile from our usual concert venue, Ferneham Hall, and its resonant acoustic provides a rewardingly rich setting for strings and soloists.

The programme includes two string orchestra favourites, Grieg's "Holberg Suite" and Dvořák's "Serenade for Strings".  The other works are J.S.Bach's Suite no.2, featuring Catherine Nicholson (HCO flute) as flute soloist, and the saxophone concerto by Glazunov, with soloist Victoria Puttock.  The saxophone concerto is also the subject of the pre-concert talk at 6:30pm.  It's not often that you get an opportunity to hear a saxophone concerto, so make the most of this chance!

Saturday 23rd June 2012 Dear Havant Orchestras Updates mailing list subscriber,

This is your first reminder that the next Havant Symphony Orchestra concert is coming up soon, on Saturday 7th July, at Ferneham Hall, Fareham.  This is a special occasion because it marks the 50th Anniversary of HSO's very first concert in July 1962.

Highlights include Brahms' powerful and expressive Symphony No.4 and Liszt's inventive and exuberant Piano Concerto No.1, with soloist James Willshire, who previously performed with HSO at Oaklands School at very short notice in the January 2011 concert postponed from December 2010.  The programme also includes a colourful set of orchestral variations – Grieg's "Old Norwegian Romance with Variations" – and it opens with Rossini's dramatic overture "The Siege of Corinth".  The Rossini and the Liszt will be conducted by our current bursary holder, Robert Hodge.  See the programme page on the website for more details.

More details about the concert will be available within a few days in the Havant Orchestras newsletter, which is distributed to season ticket holders and players about a week before the concert and also appears in an edited form on the website.  We will send you another reminder when the newsletter is available.

Saturday 19th November 2011 Dear Havant Orchestras Updates mailing list subscriber,

This is your reminder that the Havant Orchestras newsletter for the 3rd December concert is now available on the website, giving full details of the HSO December concert arrangements.  It has been published a week earlier than usual (that is, two weeks before the concert) to give more time for buying tickets and checking arrangements, as the concert is at Oaklands Catholic School in Waterlooville rather than our usual Fareham venue.

The programme includes Beethoven’s “Emperor” piano concerto – with popular local soloist Karen Kingsley (recent runner-up in the News Guide Awards) – and the grand Sibelius Symphony No 2.  This will also be your first chance to see our new Bob Harding bursary holder Robert Hodge in action, as he conducts the Berlioz overture “Beatrice and Benedict”.
