James Willshire – Piano

James Willshire appears as concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician throughout the UK and abroad.  He has performed a wide-ranging concerto repertoire with orchestras including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and The Ensemble of London and has collaborated with conductors Benjamin Zander and Michael Christie.  He has given solo recitals at concert halls and festivals throughout the UK, in Barcelona, New York, Ekaterinburg, Kiev, given the opening concert of Il Festival di Londra in Italy, performed in the Paxos International Festival and has toured India three times.

In the 2000 London International Piano Competition when only fifteen, James was the youngest British pianist to be awarded an Educational Scholarship.  He has won a great many awards including the Julius Isserlis Scholarship, the MBF Myra Hess Award, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust and the Martin Musical Scholarship.  He has also received a Making Music Philip and Dorothy Green Award.

James has performed at many festivals including those at Lichfield, Edinburgh and Cheltenham and has appeared at the Bridgewater and the Barbican, and gave his debut recital at the Royal Festival Hall in 2008.  Broadcasts include live performances on the Performance Channel and Indian National Radio.  A regular performer of contemporary music, James’ debut recording of the complete piano music by Rory Boyle for Delphian Records was made in the presence of the composer.

A keen chamber musician, James is a member of the Bartholdy Trio, which was Trio in Residence at Charterhouse, London, and completed a Mendelssohn cycle and directed a Schumann Festival in 2010.

HSO is very pleased to welcome James to play with them again following his very successful, last-minute appearance with them at Oaklands School on 8 January 2011 in the postponed December 2010 concert.
